Man Forced To Marry A Dead Woman, Pay 2,000 As Bride Price

The Bauchi state Sharia commission has arrested a yet to be named imam and a groom, One Mohammed Salisu of Abujan kwata area of the Bauchi metropolis over a wedding ceremony conducted between the groom and a dead woman.

The deceased simply referred to as Halima was until her a death, a girlfriend of Salisu allegedly made a will that she be married off to her boyfriend in the event that she dies without both properly getting married.
According to sources, the mother of deceased intimated the family on her daughter’s will which led to the search of her late daughter’s boyfriend and a bride price of #2,000 being collected.

Reacting to the news, Malam Bahajatu Nasir of the Bauchi state Shariah Commission condemned the marriage, saying that the people involved in such act have been arrested. In further condemnation, an Islamic cleric in Bauchi and Chief Imam of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Sheikh Dr Mansur Isah Yelwa said:
“So, even the ones that were already married will have the marriage dissolved immediately any of the two dies. If your spouse dies, you can marry another person. But in the case of this man that reportedly married a dead woman, the marriage is null and void as it is contrary to islamic teachings”. The cleric clarified.
