The Republic of Ghana has disclosed, through the Minister of Information, Kojo Nkruma that the country deported 700 Nigerian Nationals from the country between January 2019 to February 2020, over their involvement in Crimes ranging from prostitution, robbery and fraud.
The Minister who stated this while reacting to the statement credited to the Nigerian Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who accused the government of Ghana of targeting Nigerians in their trade laws, stressing that the country has discriminatorily deported over 825 Nigerians within one year.
The Ghana Minister of Information however dismissed the claims of her Nigerian counterpart, saying that Ghana was only protecting the interest of her citizens when it imposed trade sanctions on foreigners in Ghana. He further stressed that Nigeria has in the past taken same measures to protect the interest of her local businesses which, according to him, the closure of Seme-Krake border since August 2019 was among them.
According to the Minister “The Federal Republic (Nigeria), on the other hand, is on record to have taken a number of steps in recent months, in pursuit of her national interests, which have gravely affected other countries in the region.
“These include the closure of Nigeria’s Seme-Krake border from August 2019 to date and the issuance of executive orders by Nigeria’s Presidency preventing foreigners from getting jobs which Nigerians can do, to mention a few.” he said.
